DeepSeek has long been the dark horse of China’s AI race — the open-weight challenger that forced the entire industry to rethink the cost of training frontier models. In a span of a few weeks this July, that narrative sharpened dramatically. The startup is now valued at approximately $52 billion, and it’s building its own AI chips. Both moves tell us something important about where AI is headed.
The $52 Billion Filing
On July 16, a public filing by Anhui Korrun — a bag manufacturer that holds shares in DeepSeek — revealed a valuation of 350.88 billion yuan (~$52 billion). The filing also disclosed that Tencent and CATL (the world’s largest battery maker) are among DeepSeek’s backers.
Why it matters: A $52B valuation places DeepSeek alongside the most valuable private AI companies globally — comfortably ahead of companies like Mistral AI and nipping at the heels of much older incumbents. This is remarkable for a startup that, less than 18 months ago, was known primarily for proving that Mixture-of-Experts could undercut GPT-4’s training cost by an order of magnitude.
The involvement of CATL is particularly interesting. CATL’s core business — battery manufacturing for EVs and energy storage — involves massive supply chains, factory automation, and material science R&D. Having an industrial giant of that calibre as an investor signals that DeepSeek’s technology is being viewed not just as a chatbot play, but as an industrial AI infrastructure bet.
Tencent, meanwhile, brings distribution. With WeChat’s ecosystem of over a billion users, Tencent can embed DeepSeek models into everything from search to advertising to enterprise SaaS — exactly the kind of captive inference demand that justifies a $52B valuation.
Building Its Own Chip
Just over a week earlier, Reuters reported that DeepSeek is developing its own AI chip to reduce dependence on Nvidia. The company is designing an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) optimised for the kind of sparse, MoE-heavy inference that its models use.
DeepSeek is not alone in this pivot:
- Z.AI (formerly Zhipu) recently completed a 1-gigawatt AI data centre powered entirely by Chinese-made chips — no Nvidia hardware inside. The facility will train the upcoming GLM-5.2 model.
- Huawei has been scaling its Ascend chip line and now claims parity with Nvidia’s A100 on certain inference workloads for Chinese models.
- ByteDance, Alibaba, and Baidu all have in-house chip projects in various stages of development.
This is a structural shift. US export controls were designed to slow China’s AI progress by cutting off access to advanced Nvidia GPUs. What they’ve actually done is accelerate a domestic chip supply chain that, while not yet at frontier training parity, is evolving fast enough to sustain inference at scale.
For African developers: Every Chinese AI company that builds its own chip infrastructure reduces the dependency on US-manufactured hardware. This matters because access to Nvidia H100s and B200s is heavily constrained — and priced — for developers outside the US and Europe. If DeepSeek, Z.AI, and Huawei succeed in creating a parallel chip ecosystem, the models you run could become cheaper and more accessible, even if the chips themselves aren’t physically available on the continent yet.
What This Means for Open-Source AI
DeepSeek’s rise is unique because it has remained committed to open-weight releases even as its valuation balloons. The same startup now worth $52B released DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 under permissive licences that allowed anyone — including developers in Nairobi, Lagos, and Cairo — to download, fine-tune, and deploy the models.
The question is whether that commitment survives the valuation surge and the chip pivot.
There is a real tension here. Building custom silicon costs hundreds of millions of dollars — sometimes billions. ASIC development, tape-out, and foundry runs are not cheap. The natural pressure on any startup with a $52B valuation is to monetise the moat, not give it away.
